Four miles east of central D.C., the General Hospital still stands where it served residents of D.C. for almost 200 years. It was closed in 2001, and now serves as a hypothermia shelter for homeless families in Washington D.C. Also, some of the hospital buildings have been used in the DC General Health Campus, which consists of several clinics serving various health-related capacities. The area is accessible by the blue and the orange Metro lines, with the nearest station being 'Stadium-Armory.' Attractions near the former Hospital include the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, which is the current home of the Major League Soccer team, D.C. United. Next to the stadium is the D.C. Armory, a multipurpose arena that hosts a variety of events in addition to being the headquarters of the District of Columbia National Guard. Lincoln Park is also nearby, which is open to the public and houses the Emancipation Memorial and the Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial, two great monuments of American History. Of course there is central D.C. as well, not much further away, with the White House, Capitol building, and numerous other monuments, memorials, and government buildings that can be observed or toured. To access these attractions, you can use the WMATA Metro and bus lines, or parking garages and some limited street parking throughout the city.
